Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from Sunday night’s Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky game after a heated courtside confrontation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.
The incident occurred late in the third quarter at Wintrust Arena as the Fever held an 81-75 lead.
According to the Associated Press, Freedom was seated along the baseline wearing a black T-shirt that read, “WOMAN noun. adult human female.”
Following a Chicago timeout, Cloud walked toward Freedom and began yelling and pointing in his direction. Freedom stood up with his arms extended and stepped toward the court before security and several Sky players intervened.
Security ultimately escorted Freedom from the arena.
The confrontation quickly became one of the night’s biggest storylines, overshadowing a game in which Indiana went on to defeat Chicago 113-90. Chicago forward Azura Stevens described the situation afterward simply as a “fan incident,” saying security handled it and the team would focus on the game.
A Controversial Presence
Freedom’s appearance came amid an ongoing national conversation surrounding gender eligibility in women’s sports and the WNBA.
The former NBA player recently announced that he intends to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, further intensifying an already contentious debate surrounding the league. He has publicly positioned himself as an advocate for women’s sports and attended Sunday’s game wearing the shirt that became a focal point of the incident.
Following his ejection, Freedom took to social media and criticized the decision, writing that he had been removed from a WNBA game “for supporting WOMEN.”
Cloud did not speak with reporters following the game. Sky coach Tyler Marsh said Cloud was concerned about becoming a distraction from the team and its performance.
Another Chapter in a Heated WNBA Conversation
The confrontation comes during an increasingly contentious stretch for the WNBA, with debates surrounding gender, fan behavior and political activism repeatedly becoming part of the league’s national conversation.
For the Sky, however, Sunday’s night ended with another difficult result on the basketball court. Indiana’s 113-90 victory eliminated Chicago from playoff contention and gave the Fever another significant win during their push toward the postseason.
The Freedom-Cloud confrontation now adds another layer to an already turbulent season.
